Not a bad tutorial. Not sure why you would need to convert the video though. Virtualdub takes almost anything you throw at it as long as you've got the right plugin.
It's because the MJPEG encoded video or an MP4 work best for skimming through frames smoothly. I sometimes rip MKV and while I manage, it's a pain in the ass.
